A gold medallion given to Martin Luthers infant son, Johann, bears his birth year and name in Latin. |
A detail view of the central window of the west facade of Chartres Cathedral, d ating from the early part of the 12th century. This particular window describe s the life of Christ beginning with the Annunciation. The scene depicted here is the Crucifixion of Christ. Following a fire in 1194, the cathedral was once again built to honor the relics of the Virgin housed there. When it was discovered th at these relics had survived the fire, contributions from all over France poure d in to rebuild t he cathedral. Many of the medallion windows were contributed by the guilds in Chartres, and as a consequence a unique picture of the medieval world is recorded in these windows beyond the surface religious imagery. Chartres i s unusual in the Gothic cathedral world for its wealth of stained glass windows, so that the architecture becomes a mere frame for the glass. |
Two rows of white-bearded, black-robed Greek Or- thodox priests lead a processi on of worshipers down a street to the Katholikon. Each of the bearded clergyme n wears a gold medallion around his neck with a painted symbol of Christ in the center. The whitewashed walls of the small street reflect the sunlight and make for a high- keyed picture with good shadows. A Katholikon is a Greek-style church (Greek c ross plan) and often refers to the nave of the Greek church. In this case, the Greek section of the church of the Holy Sepulcher is called the Katholikon. |
